Dauntless, by Dina L. Sleiman ~ An Illustrated Review

Hello, everyone!

This is my official book review for Dina Sleiman’s new book Dauntless. So, if you want to read it first (Though I will not put any spoilers), I suggest you do so now.

This book was exciting from the start. I instantly fell in love with the writing-style and the topic. Though I’m not a big fan of Robin Hood (because of the confusing writing), I was skeptical when beginning. My mistake. Dauntless’s style was spunky, to the point, and modern… while also having traditional Robin Hood dialogue.

The story was so well-plotted, I couldn’t put it down! This is basically how my afternoons were spent:bookcomic

Another thing I have to mention was the characters. The development in the characters was something to look at and say, “MAH GOODNESS, THAT’S JUST PERFECT!” And in all honestly, that statement is true. It was so well-done, I fell in love with Timothy Grey almost instantly. He was so full of ambition and love for Merry (the lady), it made me swoon (and frankly, very jealous…). Merry, on the other hand, was my role-model as a young lady the moment she was seen in the book (page 1, if you were wondering). She was so independent, and smart, and pretty, and epic, and strong, and kind, and so forth. I was like, “I WANNA BE HER!” Though I must admit, I wanted to slap her sometimes. But that’s all a part of the story….it'sallpartofthestoryBy the end of the book, I was all like:

ilovethisbook

For real, I devoured this book.

So this book deserves a wonderful…

drum roll, please…

5 RIBBONS!!! I WANT TO SEE THIS BOOK AS A MOVIE SOMEDAY.5RIBBONS

Thank you to the publisher, Bethany House, for the opportunity to review this book! 😀

Peace out,

Camp Anime!

Hi guys! Don’t yell at me because I’ve been gone. School’s tough.

This post is about CAMP ANIME!!!!! I went last year, but this year was waaaay better in so many ways!My cosplay!

Firstly, I cosplayed this year. If you don’t know what cosplaying is, then basically it’s where people dress up as a character and then hang out with other people that are dressed as a character (perhaps from the same franchise) and have fun. It’s pretty cool when you see how hard fans work to make sure their costumes are just right before a convention.

This year, I cosplayed as Fem!Japan from Hetaia. Honestly, I looked like a really strange girl in traditional Asian clothing with short black hair with a flower in it. I looked pretty different with the short hair, and anyone who already knew me was like “WHAAAA YOU CUT YOUR HAIR NO!!” No, I did not cut my hair. Wigs, my friends, can help you with your cosplays.

Secondly, I had friends with me, and I met a ton of people. I had told my friend about Camp Anime, and she was extremely excited almost immediately. Soon enough, we’re both signed up and psyched! On the shore!

The two of us met tons of really cool people. It was amazing how many Hetalians were there! Now, we talk all the time!

Thirdly, my siblings and I took part in some really fun panels. One of my favorites was the Movie-Making panel. We had 15 minutes to plot our small story, 15 minutes to film, and 15 minutes to edit our videos. The whole idea was two adults were reminiscing about their first convention, and then there’s a Attack On Titan... in a boat.flashback from the convention. It was genius on our friend Austin’s part! This is what it turned out to look like: http://youtu.be/Xn6YbAruJqQ

My friends and I actually ran the Hetalia panel on the spot! We also took part it Live Angry Birds, Sushi Making (Mom’s favorite), and a few others.Hetalia Panel!

The setup of the convention was that of a camp… Actually, it was a camp. We were in the woods, there was a lake, there were cabins where overnight campers slept, and a huge dining hall. My sister and I got the chance to go on a pedal boat, which was very fun.

If you want to see more: Check out this video that sums up the whole weekend! http://youtu.be/g_vUarlESG0

Thank you to all that made Camp Anime possible, to all of my friends, and to Mr. Anthony Santos for the videos. Camp Anime 2014 would not be as amazing as it was without all of you! 😀

The First Summer Weekend!

Hellooooo, friends! Welcome back!

Weekends! Yeah! This past Friday was the private school’s last day of school. It was hot and sunny and it was beautiful out! Birds were chirping, sun was shining, a breeze was blowing, men were mowing, and of course, the kids were playing. Seriously, it was awesome.

Something else that was awesome was what we played. Personally, I stayed on my swing most of the time. But the boys played kickball nearly the entire time! Here’s what happened according to my brother, Ludwig:

APHKICKBALL“I WON!” says he, Ludwig. “I beat the AWESOME PRUSSIA (Gilbert) in a kickball tournament and ranked Germany the best country at kickball.”

Yes, he won. It was very interesting to watch and cheer Gilbert on. I didn’t really want Ludwig to win, but he did. So, to celebrate Ludwig’s victory, Gilbert, Ludwig, Romano, and Alfred all jumped into Gilbert’s pool.

My sister Emma and I jumped into our friend Feliks’s pool with our other friend Wanwan. We chilled in that pool for hours and hours, playing volleyball and eating popsicles. It was super fun.

Let’s just say it was a Solstice Full Moon weekend. Even though most of the kids had school the next day, it felt like it was Summer Vacation. And at the end of each day, the older kids took a walk.

This summer’s going to be AWESOME! Got anything planned? Now, just like last year, I’m going to tell you about a game we regularly play: The Kicking Game

SwingsetAs you can see, this game involves kicking. Here’s how to play. One person sits on a swing (person A) while another holds a ball (person B). Person B has to throw the ball at Person A’s feet and A has to kick the ball as hard as they can, making the ball soar. The object for person B is to catch the ball in the air so he can get a turn on the swing and switch places with person A.  This makes it fair when there aren’t enough swings for everyone!

Also: Can anyone name what show all the kids on the street are named after? Put your answer in the comments! This is my newest drawing over here!Canada-drawing-seal

Art of the Goat and the Cat

Hello, welcome to Road2Gold!

Today, I’m going to talk about the arts. My family has always been pretty artistic. My mom writes, my bro and I play instruments, I draw.

Here’s what I do to get an idea for a work of art: Listen to music, let my imagination go free, and boom… art.

There are many forms of artistic talents out there. There’s music, literature, painting/drawing, dance, and a whole lot more!

So, what do I do for art? Let me show you…

Here’s what I wrote in English class the other day:

Billy and Friskies, Chris and Joe

“Get back here you goat!” Farmer Joe yelled.

Billy Goat was running as fast as he could from Joe. He had a dream to become president of the United States. The day he would become president, he’d lock Joe in jail.

“Stupid goat,” Joe muttered to himself. “I’ll get you!”

Billy ran into the town square in D.C. He saw an orange cat with stripes. “Good day,” He bleated.

The cat cocked her head. “Meow?” She purred. “Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow.”

Billy gave up speaking to the cat for he didn’t understand meow. “Bleat bleat.” Billy continued running until he felt something on his back, the cat!

“Meow meow!” The cat said. “MEEEOW!

Billy and the cat turned to the post office. They tripped a guy with a bag and almost hit a mailbox.

“Stop him!” Joe cried. He had followed Billy all the way to the post office. “The goat, get him!”

The guy with the bag grabbed Joe’s leg, trying to get up. But Joe just fell down.

“What are you doing, fool?” Joe lectured the guy. “My goat is running away from me!”

“Help me up first and I’ll help you find your goat and my cat!” The guy said. After Joe had helped him up, he introduced himself as Chris Hanbag.

“I’m Joe. I live on a farm in Pennsylvania. How my goat ran to Washington D.C., I don’t know.”

Chris and Joe tried tracking the two animals. They asked the city’s people. All they said was they saw them going towards the White House.

“Oh no!” said Chris. “What are they going to do now? That cat’s curious. She’ll climb Mount Everest!”

“Bleat! (It’s the White House)” Billy exclaimed. “Bl- Bleat! (I’m going to become President!”

“Meow meow! (I’ll be your Vice!)” The cat said. “Meow meow purr Friskies! (My name is Friskies!)”

A week later, Billy and Friskies ruled the United States for eight years. They locked Joe in jail and appointed Chris for U.S. Senator of Virginia.

THE END

There you have it! A work of art!

Another type of arm I enjoy is, as some of you may already know, drawing!

Here is one of my recent drawings:

itachidrawingseal

Another type of “Canvas Art”, as I call it, is using computers. Back in the summer, I wrote a post about using PhotoShop to make my pals from the neighborhood the Superfriends. Well, I’ve gotten a bit better using PhotoShop since then as you can see. (The one in the top left is the original picture.)

Naminepsdseal

The musical part of the arts is another one of my favorites. I play the piano and my little bro plays the electric guitar. We sound quite well together.

In the end, anything you create is art. Whether it’s drawing, composing, choreographing, it’s still art.

What types of art do you enjoy?

Christmas Sketching

Hello, welcome to Road2Gold!

Nice to see you all again. I hope you all had a great Christmas! I know I did!

Christmas is a great time to hang out with the people you love. It is also a time of doing things you like to do. One of those things to me is sketching or drawing.

My sister and I have been drawing a lot over Christmas Break. I’ve been helping her with her heads and anatomy, and I have been reading how to improve my own drawings.

Here is a few that I’ve drawn:TemaridrawingsealSasukedrawingseal

And here is one that my sister did:AkamarudrawingBseal

We both drew characters from a TV show and we both were very pleased with how they came out!

I have finally mastered heads and faces. We both have gotten better at drawing this winter and we hope to improve all the more in 2013!

Happy drawing and Happy New Year!

Summer Fun Caught on Camera

Helloooooooooo!

School is out for the summer, and this past weekend we had some camera fun with the  neighborhood kids!

At first we tried to make a movie but the sound didn’t work. 😦 So we opted for still photos of ourselves and uploaded them to the computer. Photoshop can be just as fun as making movies. We posed as if we were using magical powers and edited the pics to make it look like we really did have magical powers! It looked kinda cool! I’ve included the finished pieces for your viewing.

The day flew by, but the next day, we gave filming another shot.

This time we captured every minute of it! Some of the videos didn’t have all of us in it, but it was still very fun! We had shows like the World’s Funniest Falls. It’s where I tape everyone fall down the hill in our yard. Unfortunately, I had to fall as well while someone else taped me scream to my doom! We also taped interviews and I asked everyone questions like “What’s your favorite color?” or “What is your favorite thing to do?” Another video is us acting like babies in the dark. It is SO annoying!

I cannot show you the videos  for protection reasons, but let me tell you, there are some pretty talented actors in the neighbrohood.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer will be like! And I am really digging this making movies thing!

What are you going to do this summer? Any big plans? What fun have you had already?

*For some ideas, here is how to play Everybody Get a Move On, a game we play regularly in our yard*

Needed: a ball, bases(or a dirt patch or something), people.

The object of the game is to avoid being IT and not getting tagged by the ball. How to do this succesfully is easy! just hop on a base! BUT you must leave the base when the CAPTAIN says: “EVERYBODY GET A MOVE ON!” then everybody starts running! If you are IT, aim for the CAPTAIN. When IT tags CAPTAIN, IT becomes CAPTAIN, who is then IT. Follow me? Tips: Since there are no more than 2 players on a base, go for empty bases. Just saying.

Working The Dreams

Hello, Welcome to Road2Gold!

As a Girl Scout, I recently began working on the Financing My Dreams badge.

The first step in achieving this badge is to explore dream jobs.

My favorite movie ever is How To Train Your Dragon by DreamWorks Animation SKG.

So, this being the case, I have always wanted to work for DreamWorks.

For this particular badge, you have to research the salary for the job of your dreams. I got an estimate of $50,000-$100,000. (I think that’s good, right?)

The second step in this badge was finding a dream home.

I aimed for a house near DreamWorks in California. I found this house for sale at a price of $430,000! My mom said houses in CA cost a lot. I can see that. The good thing is, the house is only a five minute drive away from DWA!

And for that badge, that’s as far as I’ve got.

In the past few weeks, I have really researched 3D animation and stuff like that.

The farthest I have gotten is Flipnotes on the Nintendo Dsi. They’re like animations that you draw and draw and draw (that sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) until you end up with a flipbook movie! You then can create GIF files on your Dsi.

But 3D animation is VERY different. It has more of a real life to it rather than just a drawing. It’s what you can do with those drawings and what they can become.

Every second in a movie can take a few hours with movement and background and other stuff like that.

It takes a lot of computers, codes, people, work, a cast, music, and lots of time to make one movie.

For instance: How to Train Your Dragon was released in 2010 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 will come out in 2014.

Well, I hope someday I’ll be able to do that stuff.

Lil’ bit of culture

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Road2Gold!

Today, I will tell you about one of the many things I want to do before I kick the bucket. (And when I do, it will soar! 🙂 )

I would like to go to Japan.

About four or five years ago, I studied Japan in school. I started learning the Japanese language, about their culture, and stuff like that. I found a site that would put the Japanese words and letters and numbers into songs to make it easier.

A year later at DOZ Camp (DOZ is an org. that praises God with dance.), I met a girl from Japan! The next year, I met another Japanese girl. Last year, another! This year there will be yet another.

Last year, in March, the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. I was worried sick for my friends. But thankfully, they were okay. Thank God!

Their language is difficult to learn. There are no similarities to English or Latin. But I am learning and I’m going to teach you a few words right now!

Hello/good afternoon      こんにちは                   konnichiwa

Good morning                   おはようございます     ohiogozaymus

Good evening                   こんばんは                    konbanwa

Thank you                          ありがとう                   arigato

Bathroom                       バスルーム                   basurūmu

Goodbye                           さようなら                    sayonara

Who                                    誰が                                darae ga

What                                  何                                     nani

Where                               どこ                                 doko

When                                時                                      toki

How                                  方法                                 hoho (like Santa)

Are                                   です                                  Desu

You                                  あなた                              anata

Me/I                                私を                                  watashi wo/wa

So there is your “little” Japanese lesson for today.

The only reason I am iffy about going to Japan is the food. The dishes will usually contain noodles, fish, soup, sushi, and much more! I am not a sushi or fish person, but I love Miso Soup. It is a soup that has Wakame (a type of seaweed) in it. It’s great!

Desserts are yummy too!

Also, there are multiple types of drawing or art in Japan. The two I know of are Anime, and then there’s your Japanese paintings which are very detailed.

Anime is an art form that is cartoonish but somewhat detailed rather than other cartoons you’d see on PBS Kids. In the 40’s, just after the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Osamu Tezuka stepped forward in all the horrible and fresh memories and established the manga artist.  He created Tetsuwan Atomu. And Astro-Boy was born! Well, not really. Astro-Boy wasn’t “born”, he’s a robot.

Other versions of anime like chibi have been introduced over the years.

The realistic side of Japanese arts are detailed, interesting, and quite old. Many artists had drawn Mount Fuji (the highest mountain in Japan). A famous painting is the Katsushika Hokusai.

Hopefully, I will go someday.

Sayonara! (for now)

Sore Subjects

Hello, my fine friends, and welcome to Road2Gold!

If you don’t know, I LOVE to draw! Mostly Kingdom Hearts characters! (Kingdom Hearts has the blogging floor for another day.) To stay organized, I would put all my drawings in a little blue folder. This particular folder became VERY special to me. Since it was so special, I just HAD to bring it to church one day. Yeah… shouldn’t have done that.

That day my folder “vanished”.

That night, I wanted to draw. (And I don’t like drawing without my folder. It just doesn’t feel right.) It was pouring. So, in my PJs, I walked into the rain to get my folder. It wasn’t there!

The next week, we looked EVERYWHERE (and I mean everywhere) for this folder.

I cried.

Months of work, gone.

I couldn’t accept it, which I still can’t.

But, this past week, I went to my friends’ house and her sister told me to draw Kairi. (From KH) After that, I couldn’t stop drawing! I just wanted to draw and draw and draw and draw and draw. (If I had the kind of time, of course.)

Unfortunately, my folder wasn’t in my hands where it SHOULD have been.

Fortunately, I took a picture of every single one of my pictures! Though I still miss that folder, I found I had improved SO much.

For example:

Riku, (yes, from KH) HE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A CHIN! He didn’t before. Now, he does! (Yippee!)

That is Riku. He has a chin.

Kairi: Wow… I was a very interesting drawer then. She looks better now.

Lessons to be learned? Don’t cling to things. You could lose them. Yes, it will hurt, so have your time to be upset, and then just do it again! If you’re like me, you just might have improved.

I know you don’t want to go near it again because it brings back memories of you losing your work, (or something along those lines) But still, you need to do it again!

So, Yeah. Same for all you writers out there who have lost their work. Do it again! You DON’T want to end up like that lady:

 See?

The thing is, it’s okay to have something important in life, but don’t cling to it too much, because it could all be lost.
